Interview with Primordial Black

1-Hello guys how are you …..how many packs of beer you destroy today héhé! At first congratulation on the release of your debut single “The Worm That Gnaws At Night” introduction of your band to a world uninitiated with your work?and how does it feel to have your music out there for the world to hear ?

- Hello guys and thank you for having us. Actually I’m not that much of a drinker, but when we celebrate it’s usually “SHOWTIME!!!” (Laughing). And to answer your question, so far, the feedback are amazingly positives. We’re all pretty much stoked by the amount of love our first single is getting.

2-Please give us an explanation of the inception of What is your goal  target what inspired you to create band and what intentions did you have ?

- I started the band sometimes last year, the main goal was to compose songs that could act as a catharsis to the hatred I was feeling at that time. I’m a big Celtic Frost fan and Monotheist  was an album I have always wanted to us as a blueprint production wise. On this long path to the release of the EP, I have met plenty of amazing individuals, some of which I hope to call friends for life or even brothers. I am beyond grateful for having the chance to call them BANDMATES. We aimed  to create a disturbing, hypnotic and addictive atmosphere and strike a fine balance between the rage, the passion, the journey, the revolt, the disgust with the world around us.
3-Primordial Black why this name? Can you tell us more about the meaning

- I needed a name that could represent the darkness I wanted to inject into this project. Primordial Black imposed itself on its own during one of my winter night excursions by the sea.

4-What are the metal bands that influenced you or motivated you?

-As far as I am concerned and as I mentioned above, Celtic Frost is by far one of my primaryinfluences. But I think what makes our group strong is the influences Mohammed (Our drummer) and Walid (Lead Guitarist) bring.
Mohammed is a fervent fan of Norwegian Black Metal and his drumming is an astonishing mix between the technicality inherent to this scene and a Thrash and Tribal wildness.

Walid is an aficionado of Polish Black Metal and the leads he places under my primate rhythms Guitars (Laughing) add enormously to the discordant side of our music.

5-What kind of music do you listen to yourself

- To be honest, aside from the big releases of groups that I really appreciate (Black Dahlia Murders - Behemoth - Tryptikon - Grima - etc.), I listen to very little metal at home. I’m more into alt prog rock, IDM and electronic-ambient music.

6-What are your occupations outside Primordial Black

- I’m a Digital Marketer and I also do some Graphic Design works. Among other things, I take care of the entire graphic identity of the band.

7-What do you think of the worldwide death metal and extreme scene today?

- In the group I think that we all have the same logic, we tend to love bands that do something out of the ordinary. We like bands that has a vision and the courage to try to go on a completely different path than everyone else.
For example, I’m in love with Absent In Body, a post-metal and sludge band that is really radical, not imposed by any limitations or boundaries to create this music.

This is the kind of spirit we adhere to.

8-What can you tell us about the songs that are available on your officiel youtube?

- The Worm That Gnaws at Night is a song that acts as a metaphor. The Worm we are talking about is not necessarily a demonic being as the title of the song suggests. Rather, it is an image that objectifies the feeling of loss of control and self-hatred, which lurks at the periphery of the human soul and waits for the right moment to attack.

9-Primordial Black is on the top 10 in African metal what was your reaction about this

- I think we were as surprised as everyone else. It's our first single and we didn't think we'd be included in any top charts. Being ranked with such a talented group of bands is a blessing and has allowed us to create links with other minds who share our values.

10-How would you describe your style of music?, how is  the condition of your recording of The Worm That Gnaws At Night ?,How was the  recording of the on studio session  , how do you write your music ?

- Since there is no better term, I will describe our music as Blackened Death Metal. The musical equivalent of sitting in a room full of people and having an internal panic attack. (Laughing).

- I’m not a good guitar player. I’m an average songwriter but not a good technical player. Walid and Dalii are million years ahead of me. I use my ability to my advantage to write stupid riffs. It’s true though a good riff should be on the borderline of being stupid because it’s catchy. That’s how I write songs.
I sit in front of my recording setup and start by constructing a skeleton. I don’t want to write too much because I don’t want the guys to feel too limited. I know one thing when I bring a song idea to the guys. It’s going to sound better. If there is any talent that I have, it’s the ability to surround myself with people that are going to make me look good. People that are incredibly talented.

- We recorded the song in bulks. We recorded guitars to a click track with Mohamed Raouf Youssef at Music Factory Studio, then recorded the drums/bass and vocals in another studio, Make Music Studio with Selim Achour as engineer.
Early on we made the conscious choice to record a real drum kit and not to use Plugins. Which turned out to be much more expensive but we wantedto honor Mohamed Ben Haddida's drumming.

We also had the honor of being able to work with Yassine Omri in his Silver Steel Studio located in France. Being mixed and mastered with analog studio elements instead of everything digital added to the organic feeling we wanted to have.

11-Do you already have things in the plans after the single ...? new album? Touring? Any new Ep's or Split with any band in the horizon?

- Yes, our first EP will be released on January 12th by M&O Music and we are already working on the demos of our first album which we hope to be able to record next year.

- Regarding live performances, we are in solidarity with what is happening in Palestine and we do not think it is wise at this time to celebrate our music live. Maybe later when the situation has calmed down and justice has been done.

12-How is the metal scene in Tunisia?

- The Tunisian scene is in full revival. The various festivals which took place this year under the leadership of Agartha, Ali Djaziri and the Mena Rock Festival have largely put the scene back on its feet.

There are many groups that have been created and others that have resumed after years of hiatus.

I am hopeful, especially knowing that the scene is diverse.

13-Any fav bands to get on stage with? any future fest, gigs?

- For me it would be: Gaerea, Grima, Mastodon or the Black Dahlia Murder.
I guess our drummer would add DimmuBorgir, Dalii our bassist would choose Megadeth or Patera and Walid will put MGLA in the Wishlist.

14-Are you satisfied with the M&O MUSIC or you want to record your stuff at more professional studio ?

 - M&O MUSIC is our label.

15-Which label would fit your music?

- Our dream labels would be Season of Mist or Nuclear Blast

16-What is your daily consumption amount of alcohol,cigarettes...... ?

- I quit smoking, the guys are occasionally smokers and let’s say we drink once in a week to relieve the stress

17-Thank you a lot for sharing your time with No Mercy Zine , do you have any particular messages for  particular people Or any closing notes , last words are yours ?

- I would like to thank you for this opportunity that you gave us to talk about our project.

I also thank everyone who appreciated our first single, promising them that the EP is even more explosive.

On closing note, we encourage every person who liked our music, to have a listen and watch the bands of our local scene. Sometimes you may find a new band to listen to and follow, and be sure that every time you’ll discover something that was created with a passion, we don't get anywhere else.

Ultimately in 2023 a primitive, prehistoric, pure and true death metal, without advanced technology or effect or sound modify, a hope that makes us forget the Invasion of modern metal.

Lucifers Crown is an heavy sound from the caves of hell for Hell's Headbangers, traditional style of old school death metal with satanic , anti-christianity / Antisemitism and blasphemy  influences with U.S southern touch  (dark, Satanic death metal) early Morbid Angel and Acheron early underground death metal bands back to my head when I listen Lucifers Crown ,just by the preview of Prophetic March of The Devils Legion you will understand it is like Hell's Judgement or beginning of eternal war, but the most important thing on this album you can see the 'golden age  '80s/early '90s death metal

Evil Incarnate on this album presents a pretty easy-peasy and simple run of traditional death metal riffing and sometimes guitars were heavy as hell

the production, is a miror of the mid-'90s sound. The mix is completely dominated by the dirty, ultra-bassy guitar tone, which is so distorted as to render some of the more minimalist riffs. Drums are pushed into the background and nestled next to the vocals, with only bass drums and cymbals being very readily audible, as the gruff, mid-range growls of Michael Eisenhauer occupy a similar acoustic space to the guitar, pushing them together into a single homogenous mass. The overall sound is very forceful and seething, and it fits the somewhat chaotic style of death metal that Evil Incarnate plays pretty perfectly. It's clean enough to allow the listener to understand everything that's going on, but not so much that the evil, anti-Christian atmosphere is compromised.

I think , you should have no no no  you must have  " Lucifers Crown " in your collection..
